My Rats Diet

Oxbow Regal Rat is available all the time for them.

Breakfast:
I usually eat breakfast in my room, which is a bad idea because I then have six rat faces staring me down until I give in and give them some of what I'm eating. So, usually, for breakfast they will get: Oatmeal, some Cheerios, fruit, small piece of a bagel with some cream cheese, or a little bit of scrambled eggs.

Dinner:
Every night, my mischief gets a bowl full of fruits and / or veggies of what we have on hand. Sometimes I will top the veggies and fruit off with some cream cheese or cottage cheese, or shredded Mexican blend cheese (but not too often).

Also, they get a bowl full of special mush. It consists of 1/8th teaspoon of The Missing Link: Small Animal Formula, 1/8th teaspoon of Solid Gold Seameal, Gerber Oatmeal or Rice Cereal (normally I go for the rice cereal, however the store I was at was out when I went.), and baby food. Generally I just stick with veggie or fruits flavors. I use enough baby food and cereal and water to make enough for my six rats.

Along with the other food, they get a home made seed and grain mixture that I make every few months. I will put what is in in below. Each rat gets 1/2 tablespoon, so 3 tablespoons for my six. This mixture is based off of the Rat Whisperer's Mix, and RattieHedgieGirl's (aka RatGirl44 on Youtube) mix.

Plague Rats Seed & Grain Mix
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup rye berries
  • 1 cup pearled barley
  • 1 cup hulled barley
  • 1 cup steel cut oat groats
  • 1 cup whole oat groats
  • 1 cup puffed kamut (some rats refuse to eat this, other love it. Half of mine love it, and the others won't eat it. If you have any left over, I suggest you eat it because it is very tasty!)
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup bran flakes
  • 1 cup raw buckwheat groats
  • 1 cup wild rice
  • 1 cup of puffed rice
  • 1 cup hulled millet
  • 1 cup hemp seed
  • about 1/2 cup or so of raw hulled pumpkin seeds
  • a handful of sunflower seeds (you can get hulled seeds as well, as they are quite messy if left whole)
